The Saint on TV

Episode 59: The Frightened Inn-Keeper

"THE FRIGHTENED INN-KEEPER"

Roger Moore, as the Saint, steps into strange events happening in a Cornish
inn when he responds to an appeal for help from the inn-keeper's daughter.

The girl is the attractive young British actress Susanne Neve, who rejoins
Roger Moore after appearing with him in an earlier "Saint" episode, "The
Benevolent Burglary."

Other members of the cast are Michael Gwynn, Howard Marion Crawford, Norman
Bird, Percy Herbert, John Gabriel and Edward Cast.

Simon Templar, the Saint (ROGER MOORE), is intrigued by the appeal sent to
him by a girl named Julia Jeffroll (SUSANNE NEVE). She asks him to visit a
remote inn down in Cornwall. Strange, frightening things are happening
there.

Simon responds to the S.O.S., and has a cold welcome from the inn-keeper,
Julia's father Martin Jeffroll (MICHAEL GWYNN). It is obvious that Martin
doesn't want him there. It is equally obvious that Martin is a very
frightened man, and Julia tells Simon that, apart from strange noises she
has been hearing, she is worried because her father is very evidently scared
of three men who have been staying at the inn for the past six weeks.

Martin hasn't owned the inn for long. He has retired from a lifetime of
engineering overseas. the three visitors also have engineering associations:
they are former members of the Royal Engineers. One is "Captain" Portmore
(HOWARD MARION CRAWFORD) - who was, in fact, a catering officer in the R.E.
Another is Weems (NORMAN BIRD), who was a clerk. The third, and dominant,
member of the trio is ex-Corporal Tom Kane (PERCY HERBERT).

The Saint and Tom Kane come to blows almost immediately, and Simon is more
than every convinced that Julia was fully justified in asking for help.

That night, he sees the four men going off in a truck, and he goes
downstairs to take a look at the cellar. At first glance, there is nothing
unusual about it. Simon then discovers that it has a door which leads into a
tunnel. It has a railway in it - a railway clealy used to dispose of earth.

An overheard conversation reveals that the men are expecting to come into a
fortune, and Julia is both relieved and excited, convinced that her father
and the three men have come across smuggled treasure.

But the end of the tunnel proves to be curiously close to a nearby prison,
in which a bank robber named Bellamy (EDWARD CAST) is serving a long
sentence. It is more than a coincidence, too, that Bellamy's solicitor,
Yesterman (JOHN GABRIEL), should also be Martin Jeffroll's solicitor.

Unfortunately, Yesterman recognizes the Saint, which means that plans are
promptly put in hand to eliminate Simon. The method chosen means that Julia
will also be killed and in making a desperate effort to save his daughter's
life, Martin upsets everything.........
