The Saint on TV
Episode 38: The High Fence
"THE HIGH FENCE"
The Saint has a date with a glamorous actress, little expecting it to lead
to murder and the grim hunt for one of London's most ruthless master
criminals.
When Simon Templar, the Saint (ROGER MOORE), calls for the excitingly lovely
actress Gabby Forrest (SUZANNE LLOYD) to take her to the threatre, he finds
her all ready to go. But they have not proceeded far before she remembers
that she has left the theatre tickets at home. They return, and Simon waits
outside in his car while Gabby goes in to fetch them. He hears her scream.
Two men are in the house. But it is too late to prevent their getting away
with her jewellery.
The case is handled by Inspector Pryor (JAMES VILLIERS), a somewhat
supercilious young man who succeeds in rubbing everyone up the wrong way. He
does, however, manage to trace one of the burglars, a rather pathetic little
crook named Johnny Answorth (HARRY TOWB), who is taken into custody. Pryor
is convinced that this is a case which might lead him to one of the London's
most ruthless master-criminals, known as "The High Fence". But before Johnny
can be persuaded to talk, he collapses and dies - aduaciously murdered in
the police station itself, to the infuriation of Chief Inspector Teal (IVOR
DEAN), who blames Pryor for allowing it to happen.
Someone has succeeded in smuggling a poisoned cup of tea into the police
station. The man who has done so is the crook who has orgainised the
burglary of Gabby's house - Quincy (PETER JEFFREY).
The Saint is very personally interested in the case. So is Bob Stryker
(STANLEY MEADOWS), a former Scotland Yard detective who is now an insurance
investigator. Simon and Stryker work together, independently of the police,
and Simon succeeds in persuading the dead Johnny's widow (CLARE KELLY) to
reveal that her husband's companion on the night of the burglary was Jim
Fasson (DYSON LOVELL).
Simon and Stryker call on Fasson, but Quincy spots them. Fasson is shot, but
before he dies is able to tell Simon to watch the Kosy Cafe in Hatton
Garden. Simon follows up the clue and Gabby Forrest takes a job as a
waitress. This takes them one step further - to the jeweller, Enderby
(REGINALD BECKWITH). But Quincy, watching the cafe, recognises Gabby.....
with the grim result for Simon and Enderby that they are caputred and come
face to face with the High Fence himself and are about to be plunged to a
terrifying death in London's sewers when Insepctor Teal arrives, in the nick
of time.
Who is the High Fence? Simon is not exactly surprised to find out......
