The Saint on TV
Episode 36: The Lawless Lady
"THE LAWLESS LADY"
The Saint joins forces with a beautiful, titled crook, and sets about the
task of avenging a murder, tricking a yacht-load of modern pirates and
reforming his enchanting accomplice.
The Saint, Simon Templar (ROGER MOORE), scrapes acquaintance with the
glamourous Countess Anusia Marova (DAWN ADDAMS) - Audrey to her friends - in
his own audacious manner, and persuades her to take him in as a partner.
Audrey is one of the most astute crooks in London, using her social position
to help her with her crimes. Simon, however, is less worried about her
robberies than he is about her aggressive henchman, Hilloran (JULIAN
GLOVER). He has a score to pay off: Hilloran, during one of the robberies,
killed a night watchman, leaving a widow and two children. The dead man was
one of Simon's friends.
Hilloran is furious at the new partnership. He is also suspicious. Audrey
tells him she has set up a job to test the Saint, and Simon carries it out
satisfactorily, though he tips off Inspector Teal (IVOR DEAN), which leads
to one of Audrey's men, Sanders (ROLAND IBBS), being arrested in Holland.
Sanders' disappearance worries Audrey and increases Hilloran's suspicions,
but Audrey has complete trust in the Saint. She insists on Hilloran leaving
right away for Cannes to make preparations for her greatest coup. She has
chartered a yacht and has invited three of the richest men in England to
spend a week with her. Their wives own jewellery worth a fortune, and Audrey
has worked out a highly ingenious act of piracy to appropriate the jewellery
without the risk of any suspicion being directed towards herself.
Audrey, by now hopelessly in love with Simon, sees everything going her way
- until Hilloran discovers the truth about Sanders' disappearance. He swears
to kill Simon. The disillusioned Audrey makes a quick change in her plans,
but is double-crossed by Hilloran whose own plans, however, don't go quite
the way he has anticipated. Simon is one step ahead of him.
The Saint not only avenges the death of his friend, but paves the way to the
orphans - and other orphans as well - receiving the help they need and
deserve, and in doing so he gives Audrey the opportunity to start out on a
