Episode 27: The Rough Diamonds

"THE ROUGH DIAMONDS"

A consignment of industrial diamonds is hi-jacked after its arrival in
England, two security guards are murdered, and the Saint plunges into a case
full of unexpected twists and turns.

Simon Templar, the Saint (ROGER MOORE), finds himself travelling to England
in the same 'plane as Alan Uttershaw (DOUGLAS WILMER) - and with a hundred
thousand pounds worth of diamonds which Uttershaw is bringing from Africa
for delivery to a company named Ourley-Linnet.

The diamonds are handed over to the waiting armoured van guards - and the
news soon breaks that Uttershaw has been the victim of a hi-jacking plan.
The van has been ambushed and the real guards killed before the diamonds
were collected.

The Saint's interest in the case is therefore a personal one, and it is not
long before he finds it far more mystifying than it seemed at first.

Milton Ourley's (GEORGE A. COOPER) life is not at all straight-forward. His
wife, Tina (VANDA GODSELL), is a woman trying desperately to retain her
looks, and always with a younger man in tow. Her relationship with her
husband is strained, but for business reasons he has much of his possessions
in her name.

Ourley's relationship with his partner, Gabriel Linnet (WILLIAM DEXTER) is
also strained, and when Ourley is murdered several things emerge. One is
that Ourley is his heir. The other is that there is apparently something
deeper than business association between Linnet and his secretary, Barbara
Sinclair (JEMMA HYDE).

Ourley has everything to gain from the robbery - the insurance money and
probably the diamonds as well. He also has everything to gain from his
partner's death.

But where exactly do Tina Ourley and Barbara Sinclair come into this web of
deceit, murder and robbery? And why is an attempt made to pin suspicion on
the Saint himself? Simon Templar's persistence unravels one knot after
another, and in the end it is Uttershaw who provides him with the surprising
solution.
