The Saint on TV
Episode 24: The Work of Art
"THE WORK OF ART"
The Saint's visit to a girl friend in Paris results in his becoming involved
in the murder of an O.A.S. undercover agent.
For Simon Templar, the Saint (ROGER MOORE), Paris in Spring means a meeting
with the fascinating Juliette Grillot (YOLANDE TURNER), but the meeting
turns into stark drama when Juliette's brother, Andre (ALEX SCOTT), is
suspected of murdering his partner, Jean Bougrenet (JOHN BAILEY).
Andre is unaware of the fact that Jean is an undercover agent for the
Algerian rebel, Major Quintana (MARTIN BENSON), who has given him forged
U.S. bearer bonds to sell, to raise funds for the movement.
When Jean double-crosses the Major, he makes plans for a getaway, and
changes a cheque signed by Andre for 500 francs into 500,000 francs. Andre
discovers this when the bank 'phones him, and goes immediately to Jean's
apartment. Jean hasn't returned, but when Andre finds a bulging briefcase he
takes it in the belief that it contains the stolen money. To his
astonishment he later finds that it is filled with bearer bonds.
Major Quintana is also anxious to see Jean and finds him when he returns to
his apartment, learns that he is planning a getaway and kills him.
The police suspect Andre Grillot. His fingerprints are all over the
apartment, and he has reasons for killing a partner who has just swindled
him.
As a friend of Andrew and his sister, the Saint steps in - to the great
displeasure of Inspector Quercy (MANNING WILSON), who finds an excuse to put
him under the personal surveillance of Seargeant Luduc (ROBERT CAWDRON) for
the remainder of his stay in Paris.
The Saint makes several discoveries, among them that the dead man has been
born in Algiers and another that the forged bonds could have been created by
only one expert, a pole named Vladek Urivetsky, known as the Master Forger
of Europe. But Urivetsky is supposed to have been shot in Algiers some time
ago. The Saint is convinced that he must still be alive and that he is with
Major Quintana. With the help of Juliette and throwing a wild party in order
to trick his guard, Luduc, Templar succeeds in finding Quintana and
Urivetsky (HAMILTON DYCE) and in proving the innocence of Juliette's
brother.
