The Saint on TV
Episode 7: The Element of Doubt
"THE ELEMENT OF DOUBT"
The Saint settles an account with a corrupt American attorney, using his own
methods of justice to do so.
Carlton Rood (DAVID BAUER) is a brilliant attorney; but he is also entirely
corrupt. In a matter of months, he has won acquittals for murderers and
embezzlers. He doesn't care how guilty his clients are - as long as they pay
his astronomical fees. And he doesn't mind what methods he uses - so long as
he gains the acquittals.
Nothing, it seems, can halt his progress..... until Simon Templar, the Saint
(ROGER MOORE), steps into the picture with the threat: "The next time a
client of yours gets arrested, I'm going to make his conviction my business.
Purely in the interests of justice. Understand?"
The next client turns out to be a man named Sholto (BILL NAGY), who burns
down his warehouse and, in doing so, seriously injures the woman cleaner,
Agnes Yarrow (MARGARET VINES), who sees what is happening and is pushed into
a closet. A policeman, investigating the outbreak, is killed. Agnes survives
but is blinded.
Agnes' evidence is sufficient to bring Sholto into court, but Rood's
ruthless cross-examination shatters her. He plays on her blindness, reduces
her to a state of bewildered confusion, and reaches a climax when he
produces three tape recordings, all apparently of Sholto's voice but only
one of which is authentic. Agnes cannot definitely identify which is which,
and the case against Sholto collapses.
But the case is not closed so far as the Saint is concerned. Two can play
the same game. He uses Rood's own methods to turn the tables on him. In
turn, his cunning use of tpe recordings convinces Sholto that the attorney
is planning to "shop" him in return for high favours.
Sholto bites. The Saint knows he can leave the rest to him.
